New ideas, new creativity – every year the Federal Association of Visual Artists BBK Düsseldorf accepts new members after they have gone through a selection process. Four artists present themselves this time. Everyone brings their own world of images with them. In this way, the range of artistic positions expands, and visitors enjoy a show of diversity: abstract paintings and fantastic photo worlds, surreal scenarios and expressive riots of colour.

Introduction by Dr. Jutta Hoefel

Ruth Kuehn-Loewe

We enter a painterly universe with the pictures by Ruth Kuehn-Loewe, whose intense colors draw our attention. As we approach, we gradually recognize many layers, overpainting and underpainting, translucent and opaque, in which transparent brushstrokes are clearly staggered or are completed by an opaque application. Some surfaces stand calmly in a homogeneous tone, others pulsate with contrasts light and dark, cool and warmer, some are pervaded by drawings, by lines that condense and disperse. From a distance they look like kaleidoscopes whose images change with every rotation, initially inviting us to glide through their moods. The titles of the works such as “face to face” or “hey you” arouse the additional interest in looking for human images. And so we find figurative elements, the beginnings of faces, for example, previously unrecognizable and suddenly impossible to overlook.

Introduction by Dr. Jutta Hoefel

Wolfgang Kuehn

Wolfgang Kuehn’s photographs are full of dynamism, warmth and light, they oscillate between and within these perceptions, which emanate from concrete objects and go beyond them. With “ABC in Motion” the artist portrays the performance of a band, here especially the violinist, whom we meet from different perspectives and distances, initially surveying her interaction with other musicians. The outlines of people and objects are slightly distorted by the motion blur, which increases the closer we zoom in on the scene. The contours gradually dissolve into multiple oscillating lines that absorb the vibration of the body, hands, arms and heads as well as the resonance of the instruments. The blurred traces of light also transfer acoustic impressions into visual ones, we feel the rhythm, hear the fast melodic stroking and pulling of the violin bow and are drawn into the vortex and the maelstrom of the sounds.
